Google Under Fire For Privacy Policy Placement

The San Francisco Chronicle has one of many stories today attacking Google for it’s privacy policy placement on its web site picking up on criticism by Marc Rotenberg, executive director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center.

Consumer groups asked Google Inc. to make its privacy policy more visible Tuesday, arguing that California law requires the company to place a link to the document on its home page.

Making the information more conspicuous, the groups said, would help users learn about the kind of data the Mountain View Internet titan collects about them, as well as place the company in line with the practices of virtually all other major Web sites including Yahoo, Microsoft’s MSN and Facebook.

To be honest I hadn’t noticed that Google doesn’t link to its privacy policy on the front page of its site. It’s actually incredibly unusual that a company wouldn’t have a link on every page, in my experience.
